SFU now accepting Bitcoin at its bookstores

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – There are at least 15 Bitcoin ATMs in Canada but still lots of skepticism around the alternative currency.

But now, a local university is the first post-secondary institution in the country to accept it.

Michael Yeung founded the SFU Bitcoin club and pushed hard to get the first ATMs in Vancouver. He says the fact the school’s bookstore is now accepting it legitimizes the currency even more.

“That was the goal all along when I started the club back in 2013. I feel like this is a subject that warrants business interest. So, to have this project come to fruition… it’s a pretty good turn of events.”

“The Bitcoin gets converted immediately, at the time of purchase. so, the student opens up his Bitcoin wallet, pays in Bitcoin, and immediately, that Bitcoin becomes Canadian dollars for the bookstore,” he explains.

The school will also have three Bitcoin ATMs as well.

“At this moment, I believe in Canada, we’re the only university thus far to accept Bitcoin for payment of anything,” adds Yeung.

Yeung says there are now at least 10 ATMs across BC.
