Conservatives remove federal tax on feminine hygiene products as of July 1

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – As of July 1st, feminine hygiene products will have something in common with cocktail cherries and wedding cakes.

That’s when the federal government will lift the GST on things such as tampons, now considered essential products.

Jill Piebiak with the group Canadian Menstruators says she is somewhat surprised by the response to the “No Tax on Tampons” campaign.

“Our original goal was to get 50,000 signatures online. We very quickly reached that goal and managed to get over 74,000 supporters online. In turn, we asked people to actually print and sign hard copies of the petition so that we were able to bring forward over 10,000 signatures to Ottawa.”

Piebiak says it was nothing more than a discriminatory tax.

Our argument was that if the government could take the time to talk about how a wedding cake must be exempt, but not the time to talk about why menstruation products are needed to be public and productive in this country, it was a bit absurd.”

The move is estimated to cost the government about $33 million.
