Whitecaps head out on the road on a winning note

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Gershon Koffie and Cristian Techera scored goals as the Vancouver Whitecaps snapped a two-game losing skid with a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake at BC Place. David Ousted made two saves in the victory.

Koffie, who was making his 100th MLS appearance as a member of the Whitecaps, opened the scoring in the 36th minute. Koffie hit the ball from well outside the box with his right foot and bent it past Nick Rimando for his first goal of the season.

Real Salt Lake got on the board against the run of play late in the first half. Javier Morales hit a perfect free kick that Ousted was not able to get a hand on, which tied the score 1-1.

Vancouver took the lead back in the 79th minute thanks to a miscue between Rimando and one of his defenders. Techera jumped in and grabbed the loose ball before tucking it into the empty net for his first ever MLS goal.

The Whitecaps were playing their final home game before the FIFA Women’s World Cup takes over BC Place. Vancouver will be on the road for its next five matches before finally returning home to host Sporting Kansas City on July 12th.

With the victory, the Whitecaps (7W-2D-5L) pulled themselves into a tie with the Seattle Sounders for first place in the Western Conference. Both teams have 23 points, however, Seattle has played two fewer games.

Vancouver’s next game will be against the Montreal Impact on Wednesday evening.
