Water restrictions start Monday

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – New water restrictions hit Metro Vancouver tomorrow (Monday).

Similar to last year, people can only water their lawns before nine in the mornings, with odd and even addresses alternating days.

Metro Vancouver Utilities Committee Chair Darrell Mussatto says even though the North Shore had a lower snowpack this winter, things are still in pretty good shape.

“The reservoirs are pretty much full. The three reservoirs and our backup glacial lakes full as well but we’re still advising people to treat it as a precious resource and not waste a drop.”

Homes with even numbers can water their gardens Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Odd-numbered addresses get Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Mussatto says enforcement is up to individual municipalities if people don’t follow the rules.

“Right now we’re really going with a positive information campaign to make sure people are aware of the regulations and they know when they can and can’t water their lawns. And if then there are repeat offenders we get the local municipalities to work with them to get compliance. So the last resort would be ticketing.”

He says the demand often doubles, to as much as two-billion litres of water a day during the hottest days of the year.
