Monthly passholders call TransLink’s offer after SkyTrain shutdown ‘useless’

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – FareSaver cards are being offered to TransLink monthly passholders who were caught up in the SkyTrain shut down almost two weeks ago.

TransLink calls this a goodwill gesture and says it offers value but many monthly passholders speaking with News1130 disagree.

“Since I have the pass it’s not quite as beneficial. I think it’s more beneficial for those who don’t use transit as often,” explains one rider.

“I guess they can give it to a friend or something to experience the same thing they experienced that day,” says one man. “Maybe they could discount a monthly pass for the next month.”

“I guess I would end up giving it to somebody else if I got one, it’s not a very useful thing. It would be better if there was a discount on next month or something like that,” says this rider.

“Maybe they could discount a monthly pass for the next month,” says another woman.

Colleen Brennan with TransLink says a discount on monthly passes would take a long time.

“Because we have so many fare dealers around the Lower Mainland that sell our monthly pass, it would have taken quite a long period of time and a lot of administrative work on their end to be able to actually do an actual discount on the monthly pass,” explains Brennan.

She understands people may not think this is the best route. “It’s a product that actually has value, so a faresaver has value. It could be shared; it could be gifted to a family member or friend.”

To get your FareSaver you either have to go in person to Stadium SkyTrain station or send the request by mail.

On May 21st, a freak SkyTrain fire completely shut down Expo line service and caused massive delays for thousands of riders.
