Open burning ban in effect for Mission and Surrey

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You might want to check with your city before you light up the backyard fire pit. Open burning is banned in both in Mission and Surrey.

Surrey Fire Chief Len Garis says they’ve already had to respond to dozens of fires around the city last month.

“We’ve been to about 80 plus fires outdoor and mainly from discarded cigarettes on boulevards and strip malls where bark mulch covering is used in the flower beds and so we realize this is a good sign or a strong sign that we should be warning the public about the dryness of the outdoor vegetation and asking them to take precautions.”

He says it’s a strong sign that conditions are extremely dry.

“It is about probably about one month early than normal but we’ve been experiencing a very early start to spring, to summer conditions and the dryness. The number of outdoor fires that we’ve seen is a good indication that it’s going to be a long dry, hot summer and we want to get started on this soon.”

He wants people to get used to taking extra precautions now as he says in the summer things are expected to get worse.
Things like BBQs, patios heaters, and anything mechanical are okay to use. Anyone caught in violation could get fined or pay for the cost of putting out a fire if its spreads.
