Pattullo Bridge re-opens after serious crash

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – The Pattullo Bridge has been re-opened to traffic after a long closure due to a serious five-car crash that shut down the 78-year crossing for several hours.

Surrey RCMP Staff Sergeant Blair McColl says the driver of a tow truck was heading north on the bridge when he lost control.

That driver has been arrested on suspicion of speeding and charges are being considered. “The back-end of the vehicle, I’m told, swerved over into the southbound lanes and hit a car. The truck was able to correct itself and continue on, then a little further losing control once more and crossing the road and completely demolishing a southbound car.”

The person in that southbound car was trapped until crews got there and were able to use the Jaws of Life. “We attended and began the investigation. The driver of the truck has been arrested and is being investigated for the driving that he did,” adds McColl.

Early indications show the driver wasn’t intoxicated or distracted. A total of four people were injured — one seriously, but everyone is expected to recover.

The Pattullo Bridge is down to one lane every night from 10pm to 5pm for safety measures.
