Hot weekend ahead prompts warning from Fraser Health

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Environment Canada is warning of a ‘major heat wave’ over southern BC this weekend. The highest temperatures are expected to be in the low 30s on the South Coast. However, thunderstorms are possible Sunday evening, which may cool things down slightly.

With temperatures only expected to get hotter over the next several days, you’re being warned to look out for those who may be more at risk. Those people include the homeless, kids under the age of five, seniors and anyone with a chronic illness.

Dr. Marcus Lem with Fraser Health says there are also things you can do to mitigate the risks.  “Try to avoid strenuous activity in the hottest part of the day. If you can stay in the shade when possible — that’s great. Maintain good hydration, so be drinking plenty of water and wear a hat and sunscreen and enjoying activities that will keep you cool.”

Some of the side effects of the heat include feeling dizzy, weakness, confusion and in more serious cases fainting or collapsing.

“We want folks to be out there enjoying the good weather, so we want everyone to make sure they are taking precautions and never get to the point where they have to be taken to the hospital, by that time you’re obviously not having fun,” adds Lem.

There are ways to be outside to enjoy the weather but to keep yourself safe from the sun. Lem suggests wearing sunscreen or clothing that is lightweight and a large hat, if possible.

The City of Vancouver says it’s ready to activate its extreme heat plan, in which it will open cooling centres, bring out portable water fountains and have crews keeping an eye out at busy places for anyone who may be suffering from heat-related illness.

The ban comes into effect Saturday at noon. The Coastal Fire Centre says it encompasses BC Parks and Crown land throughout the Lower Mainland, Sea to Sky country, and Southern and Central Vancouver Island. Fines for disobeying start at $345. There is no campfire ban in the southern Interior, but that will be re-assessed on Monday.
