Local food banks struggling for donations now that it’s summer

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Now that school has come to an end for kids across Metro Vancouver, local food banks are facing a major challenge — they’re being faced with high demand but few donations.

This happens every summer, in part, because children are no longer on school meal programs which can make things tough on parents at home.

Aart Schuurman Hess with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank is asking for your help and he explains what they need.

“Beans, kidney beans, chickpeas, canned fish like salmon and tuna, chicken and turkey items. And hearty meals like soups and stews and as long as they’re low in salt — I think it’s critical that we look at the label.”

He adds baby products like diapers are also desperately needed.

The food bank serves more than 26,000 people every week and 26 per cent of that is children. “So, they definitely need our help and I’m reaching out to everybody in the community to support us and to think about those little ones and think about healthy food — not candy.”

Remember, for every $1 donated to the food bank, they can buy $3 worth of food.
