VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There are almost a hundred active wildfires burning across the province following this weekend’s dry conditions and record breaking temperatures.
The weather is definitely a concern for us says Fire Information Officer Navi Saini. “We are seeing very hot and dry conditions province wide. That coupled with lightning has resulted in quite a few fire starts,” she explains.
“About half of the province is currently sitting at a high danger rating and really verging on the edge of extreme. Again these conditions are expected to continue throughout the week so we will most likely see some more extreme fire danger ratings.”
She notes with the Canada Day holiday on Wednesday, more people are expected to be enjoying the backcountry. “Most areas within the Coastal Fire Centre do have a campfire ban in effect so campfires are not allowed.”
She suggests if you must light a fire; use a portable campfire as an alternative instead.
Of the wildfires currently burning, 24 were sparked on Saturday.
