The fire danger rating remains high to extreme in much of BC

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Record-setting temperatures in parts of the province are not doing anything to help fire crews contain nearly 100 wildfires burning across BC.

It was a very active weekend for wildfires in BC according to Provincial Fire Information Officer Navi Saini. “We responded to 62 new wildfires and about 50 of these were caused by lighting. This brings a total number of active fires in the province to 122.”

Saini adds much of BC’s fire danger rating is high to extreme. “When we are seeing that fire danger rating it means that forest fuels are very dry and the fire risk is quite serious so new fires that do start will burn quickly and spread rapidly.

With more hot weather in the forecast, the rating is not expected to drop.
