Surrey Board of Trade not confident about results of transportation vote

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Confidence is low among Surrey’s business community over Thursday’s release of Metro Vancouver’s transportation plebiscite results.

The city wants to build light rail and Anita Huberman with the Surrey Board of Trade says there is no backup plan at this point.

“I’m worried, I mean it is Surrey’s turn for transportation infrastructure. We’re going to be the largest city in BC in less than 15 years and so now this delay is going to cost our economy and it’s going to cost our ability to attract business.”

She says they may even have to go toward private sector funding.

“It does mean going back to the drawing table because it needs to be a collection, a partnership to build this light rail.”

While part of the Yes Coalition, the SBOT has been one of the only critical groups on that side.

“I think you have to be realistic and I think the Surrey Board of Trade has always been realistic.”

The results of the vote are expected out Thursday at 10:00 a.m. News 1130 will have extensive coverage of the numbers and reaction from both sides of the debate.
