What is your Canada Day tradition?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s time to bust out your Team Canada swag, slap on some red face paint, and perhaps indulge in something maple-based.

The country is celebrating its 148th birthday today.

And while fireworks and lounging by the beach may be the norm, people have all kinds of traditions.

“If the rivers are flowing low enough, usually it’s fly fishing off in the back country. The Skagit River Valley just south of Hope, it’s a nice area there. Fly fishing for sure,” says one man.

“I Go out to one of the Gulf Islands or do something that is really beautiful to celebrate Canada for its natural beauty and not go somewhere and party,” says another woman.

Not everyone is able to escape this city.

“We usually go to Granville Island and enjoy the festivities over there. There’s a parade and lots of people dressed in red and white,” says the mother of a young family.

Granville Island was by far the most popular answer.

“Everybody is out on the town and the streets are closed and everybody is having a good time so I want to do the same thing. I think I’ll go to Granville Island,” says one woman who makes a point of celebrating every year.

Of course one or two people admit to a more traditional type of celebration.

“Does getting drunk count? Drinking, yeah,” says one man who has the day off.

Many people also expect to head to one of the major fireworks celebrations tonight.

The two biggest demonstrations are at Canada Place and in Surrey at the Millennium Amphitheater.
