Campfire ban in effect for much of BC

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – As of noon, all open burning including campfires and fireworks are banned across much of the province and the prohibition will be in place until the province feels the conditions are safe.

Forests Minister Steve Thomson calls this an extraordinary step and it’s being taken to help prevent wildfires sparked by people.

Much of the province is dealing with unseasonably hot and dry weather as crews battle over 150 active fires as of today.

Meantime, a fire burning near Sechelt is eight hectares in size but not contained, as firefighters continue to deal with tinder dry conditions around the South Coast.

And a wildfire that threatened about a dozen homes near Ladysmith on Vancouver Island has been brought under control.

Firefighters around the Lower Mainland have been dealing with brushfire after brushfire over the last couple of weeks.

Yesterday in Abbotsford, a spark from a front end loader lit up a pile of mulch that kept crews busy for hours as it spread to a nearby greenhouse.
