Warning of increased wildlife sightings around this time of year

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Every summer, police across the region receive dozens of reports of sightings of bear, cougars or raccoons.

Fortunately, most wild animals shy away from people, however, some animals can be overcome with the need to find garbage and some lose their fear of humans when there are no attempts to scare them away.

To reduce the likelihood of encountering a wild animal there are a few things you can do to protect you and your family.

Consider keeping your trash inside until pick up day, don’t add meat or cooked foods to compost, pick ripe fruit from your trees daily and clean your barbecue after each use.

If you do see an animal, like a bear or a cougar, remember to stay calm because the animal may just be passing through the area. Stay away from it and take any children or pets inside your home.
