BC’s most challenging wildfire season to date: forests minister

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – BC’s forests minister, who has been through the 2003 Kelowna fires and the 2010 fire season calls this the most challenging situation the province has ever dealt with.

To date more than $80 million has been spent. “The system is that we have statutory access to contingencies so that we ensure that we have the resources available to address whatever the situation is. Obviously our first priority is public safety and protection of assets,” explains Minister Steve Thomson.

The requests have gone out to other provinces and the US for help in fighting the wildfires but Thomson says resources are stretched because much of western Canada and Washington are dealing with the same problem.

He says the province is also in talks to bring in Martin Mars Water Bombers.
