Five years later, Olympic infrastructure still helping Vancouver tourism

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s shaping up to be a banner year for tourism in Vancouver. A major international sporting event that took over our city five years ago is getting a lot of the credit.

June was great for the city’s tourism industry, says Ty Speer with Tourism Vancouver.

“We know anecdotally from all of our hotel partners, attractions and local businesses that June was absolutely enormous,” says Speer. “We had a dermatology conference in, which made a huge difference, [and] we obviously had the early rounds of the Women’s World Cup.”

He expects the success to continue. “I would be really, really hopeful that this one of the best summers on record.”

“We’re almost through a week of July and it’s been great so far. We’ve got another major conference [around HIV and AIDS] coming in shortly, which is a fantastic win for the city.”

Speer credits the infrastructure left over from the Olympics for the tourism boom — including things like the convention centre and the reputation — which can take a few years to sink in.
