People in the West End saying ‘no’ to tower

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – People in Vancouver’s West End are speaking out against a proposed 21-storey building they fear will disrupt the culture of the area.
Director of a group called West End Neighbours, Randy Helten, says his group has not taken an official position, but many people in the area have opposed this development since 2008, feeling it would turn the West End into another Yaletown.
“It was considered to be too big, too dense, blocking too many views, and too much of a disruption in the neighbourhood. Now here we are in 2015 and it’s even bulkier than it was proposed in 2008,” he says.
“The West End is very densely populated. In fact, a lot of the amenities like the community centre are very heavily used already.”
The proposed building for Pendrell near Denman would have 171 rental units, and a small house already on the lot would have to be demolished or moved.
The public hearing is scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
