Whitecaps shutout in their return home

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps played their first home match since May 30th but weren’t able to reward the fans at BC Place with a win, as they fell 1-0 to Sporting Kansas City.

The ‘Caps were returning home from a season-high five-match road trip. They opened the trip with a loss in Montreal, followed up by wins in Los Angeles, New York and New England, and then finished it off with a loss last weekend in Colorado.

Vancouver was the far better team in the first half. It outshot Kansas City 4-1 with rookie centre back Tim Parker having the best chance to score in the 13th minute, but his header was stopped right on the line and it remained a 0-0 tie at the break.

Just seven minutes into the second half, the visitors opened the scoring. Kevin Ellis got his head on a Krisztian Németh cross to direct the ball past David Ousted.

The ‘Caps had a pair of close calls as they looked for the equalizer. Cristian Techera took the ball to the net from the left side of the box and had his shot deflect towards the line but it was cleared out by a defender just before it found its way in. Parker had another great chance in the final minutes of regulation as he got his foot on a free kick into the box, but wasn’t able to beat keeper Tim Melia.

The loss leaves Vancouver (10W-2D-8L) in a three-way tie with the Seattle Sounders and FC Dallas for first place in the Western Conference.

The ‘Caps will return to action on Saturday with a visit to the Portland Timbers.
