Unauthorized eye drops in Richmond seized by Health Canada

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – Health Canada is warning you about five brands of unauthorized eye drops that could be a serious risk to your health.

The eye drops were seized from two stores in Richmond — Cube Inc. and Magic Queen Cosmetics — and are labelled to contain the prescription drug neostigmine methylsulfate.

Health Canada says no approved eye drops in the country contain this drug.

In the past, drugs similar to neostigmine were in used for the treatment of glaucoma, but the medications aren’t commenly used anymore because of the potential for side effects, including: blurred distance vision, frontal headaches, twitching lids, red injected eyes, cataracts, allergic reactions, iris cysts, retinal detachment, and the potential for causing a specific type of glaucoma attack.

Absorption into the nose through the tear duct may cause serious cardiac and respiratory side effects.

If you used these products, you’re advised to see a doctor and report any adverse events to Health Canada.
