Whitecaps snap losing streak with a draw in Portland

PORTLAND, OR (NEWS 1130) – Matías Laba scored on a screamer from distance in the second half to help the Vancouver Whitecaps earn a single point with a 1-1 tie against the Timbers. The result snapped a two-match losing streak for the ‘Caps.

The Timbers held a 1-0 lead to begin the second half after Diego Valeri opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with his second goal of the season.

Vancouver pulled level in the 57th minute. Laba was given space to run with the ball and he struck one from well outside the box and found the right side of the net to tie the game. It was Laba’s first MLS goal as a member of the Whitecaps.

Whitecaps’ keeper David Ousted, who was named an MLS All-Star prior to the match, made two saves, including a big one in the final few minutes to preserve the result. Ousted was the lone member of the Whitecaps to be included on the All-Star roster.

Vancouver finished the game with 10 men, as defender Jordan Harvey was given a red card for a dangerous tackle in the first minute of stoppage time in the second half.

In three matches versus the Timbers this season, the Whitecaps have managed a win and two draws.

The single point gives Vancouver (10W-3D-8L) 33 points through 21 matches. The Whitecaps are tied with Sporting Kansas City for third place in the Western Conference standings, one point back of the LA Galaxy.

The Whitecaps will return home to host the San Jose Earthquakes on Jul. 26.
