What to do with pets for the Celebration of Light

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Bright lights and loud bangs are what make the Celebration of Light memorable, but it can put a lot of stress on our four-legged friends.

Pets big or small can be scared. Animal behaviour and animal welfare scientist, Dr Rebecca Ledger says cats and dogs can be put off by the loud noises.

She says before the next fireworks show you should see your vet and inquire about tranquilizers.

“Test out these sedatives make sure that your pet is calmed by them and then they are just perfect to give on this kind of firework night. No side effects generally, very safe to give and will make sure that your pet has a much more pleasant evening.”

She says, keep your cat or dog indoors, and if they become afraid comfort them.

“We used to think that comforting a scared pet would reinforce their fear but in actual fact we probably should be comforting in the same way that we would comfort a child who is scared of the dark.”
