Young girl dies after boating accident

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The body of a six-year-old girl has been found near Gambier Island. Her father, who had been on an aluminium boat with her last night, is still missing.

Search crews were called out around 9 p.m. Saturday.

“It had drawn some suspicion because the engine was in the water and the keys were in the ignition and so forth. So that person had tipped off the RCMP and that got our search protocol activated,” says Navy Lieutenant Paul Trenholm with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria.

It is believed that the girl had been on the boat with her father, a 60 year-old man from North Vancouver, and the Coast Guard is continuing to search for him.

“We’re treating this as a search at this time and that’s where our focus and attention is on. We’re trying to gain some insight as to where this individual might be on the water or on the shore.”

Trenholm says crews are scouring the Howe Sound region to find him.

Anyone with information is asked to contact them.
