Man dies after speedflying off a mountain near Squamish

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A 40-year-old man originally from Ontario died yesterday while speed flying off a mountain in Stawamus Chief Provincial Park near Squamish.

Speed flying is similar to paragliding but involves a smaller wing.

Barb McLintock with the BC Coroner’s Service says a more in-depth investigation will be done into Kyle MacDonald-Wolochatiuk’s death.

“He was descending quickly after he left Mount Habrich. He made contact with a tree and at that point everything fell apart, he had complete loss of control of his chute and he fell about 500 metres.”

Another speed flyer died in the same area about two years ago.

“Obviously because it’s new we want to figure out exactly what it was that went wrong, whether there was any mechanical problems or so on with his rig,” says McLintock.
