Wet weekend weather helped bring down the number of BC wildfires

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The rain didn’t do much for our reservoir levels, but it was a big help when it comes to the wildfire situation.

There are now 168 fires burning around the province; that’s down from 204 yesterday.

Ryan Turcot with the BC Wildfire Service says this is a very welcome decrease.

“The rain we saw, especially in the southern part of the province, over the weekend certainly did bring some relief, especially to some of the larger fires of note that we saw in the Kamloops and Southeast Fire Centres.”

Turcot adds the Westside Road Fire burning near Kelowna is 75 per cent contained.

He is still reminding people to take extra precautions. “It’s important that the public doesn’t become too complacent just because we saw rain over the weekend, especially because we are heading now into warmer and drier trends or the next seven to 10 days.”
