Food bank donations drop off during the summer months

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Summer is one of the busiest times of year for local food banks.

Aart Schuurman Hess with the Vancouver Food Bank says with kids out of school, there are a lot more mouths to feed.

“We have more people coming to the food bank because schools are off. Families need to take care of their children,” he tells us.

“Donations are always very, very low in July and August,” he explains. “During the summer, people are busy and doing their own thing. We have high demand and we need those donations.”

Canned fish and beans are near the top of the list of food bank needs, along with things like peanut and almond butter.

Cash donations are also welcome, as they can turn one dollar into three dollars worth of food.
