Poll finds most of us obey water restrictions, but neighbours don’t

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A lot of people living in the Lower Mainland have stopped watering their lawns under the current water restrictions, but many still claim to have seen their neighbours breaking the rules during the drought.

Almost 90 per cent of people around the province say they have stopped watering their lawn and about the same number haven’t washed their car in the last two months.

But those numbers don’t add up.

The results of a new poll from Insights West show four-in-ten people say they’ve seen their neighbours using sprinklers when they shouldn’t be.

The fine in Vancouver for breaking the current restrictions is 250 dollars.

“More than half of BC residents believe that this fine is OK. It’s really fascinating to watch the high level of support for water and the issues we need to deal with right now,” says Mario Canseco with Insights West.

When it comes to penalties for watering, more than half of British Columbians say 250 dollar is appropriate

But seeing a neighbour breaking those water restrictions can really make us upset.

“This is the kind of thing that really makes us angry and it really brings a lot of people into social media with this shaming issue. I hope that as this continues, we’ll have more residents who are really mindful of what is going on and who are taking action,” says Canseco.

Canseco says about a third of people believe the government is doing a good job managing our water supply right now as we wait for the rain to replenish our reservoirs.
