The Lions roar in to Winnipeg for a date against the Blue Bombers

By

WINNIPEG (NEWS1130) – The Lions enter tonight’s game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers with a chip on their shoulder. The Leos blew a 21-0 lead against the Toronto Argonauts last week before losing 30-27. The focus in practice this week was closing out their opponents and Head Coach Jeff Tedford thinks his team finally gets the message.

“It is about execution. It is about playing four quarters. There is going to be some up’s and down’s. There is always ebs and flows in football games, but when you do hit a setback it has to be temporary and you have to regain the momentum and that comes with making plays.”

The Lions defensive team has help on the way. Defensive back Ryan Phillips has missed the last three games because of a hamstring injury, but he will suit up tonight. He says it has been tough to watch from the sidelines, but he is excited to be back.

“Really it is just about making plays. You have to seize your opportunities. When quarterbacks put the ball in the air or there are fumbles we have to take advantage. We have to gain those momentum type plays. When momentum shifts we have to have someone out there that will go ahead and make that play.”

The Bombers are also trying to rebound after an embarrassing loss. Winnipeg was blown out 32-3 by Edmonton to slide to 2-3 on the season. The Bombers will have Drew Willy under center and Leos MVP Solomon Elimimian says he will be tough to contain.

“He is a guy who is tough, has a good arm and knows where he wants to put the ball. He has some weapons around him as well. It is a match we are excited for. We have the guys that can counter what they want to do. As long as we execute the game plan we will be successful.”

Tonight’s kick off is at 5:30 p.m.
