Homes evacuated after wildfire breaks out near Mission

By

MISSION (NEWS 1130) – A number of homeshad to be evacuated in Mission thanks to a wildfire around Hatzic Lake.

The fire is now said to be contained.

Callers to the newsroom say they could see lots of smoke billowing from the top of the mountain.

Three helicopters along with a ground crew have been battling the blaze which was believed to be around seven hectares in size.

Randy Hawes is the Mayor of that district and said he at one point, he wasn’t sure whether crews had the fire under control.

“I know that this is an acreage area so there will be some homes evacuated but I really don’t know, there’s probably 150 or so homes in that area on acreages.”

Hawes says the fire started as a structure fire before spreading due to the tinder dry conditions.

He says Emergency Services were deployed to help people if they are moved out of their homes for a longer period of time.
