2015 a big year for the Transgender community

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The rainbow flags will be flying high tomorrow for the annual Pride Parade.

2015 has been a big year for one LGBTQ+ community in particular.

“We’re in a transgender moment, if not a tipping point in society,” says Dr Kristopher Wells, the Director for the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies at the University of Alberta.

He hopes the visibility given to Transgender issues turns into action.

“The debate that’s happening in British Columbia about the importance of including gender identity and gender expression in human rights codes explicitly,” Wells notes as an example.

He says the Trans community is still plagued by violence.

“Quite frankly in the 21st century that’s simply unacceptable. Pride is a time to acknowledge how far we’ve come but also recommit to the work that’s left to be done.”
