Harper has most to lose during upcoming Maclean’s Leaders Debate: expert

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Maclean’s Leaders Debate is taking place later this week as the federal campaigning heats up.

Thursday’s debate may be the only one with all four leaders present, as the Conservatives and NDP decide over whether they will participate in any others.

UBC Political Scientist Max Cameron says Conservative Leader Stephen Harper has the most to lose and wants to keep it simple. “His message will be my government represents stability and strength and this is not a time to rock the boat. Obviously the NDP has been riding high in the polls and they are going to come in very strongly trying to respond to that argument saying this is in fact been a government that has failed and the economy is in weak shape”

As for the Liberals, Cameron says Justin Trudeau simply needs to show his party’s still in the game. “They have been slumping a bit in the polls and there is a bit of a concern that as the vote polarizes between left and right that the traditional territory, the centre of Canadian politics which the Liberals have always occupied is actually now threatened and so I think Justin Trudeau is going to try and look Prime Ministerial and experienced.”

Catch our live stream of the Maclean’s leaders debate at 5pm on Thursday August 6th on NEWS 1130.com, and watch it live on City and OMNI.
