Thousands show their Pride in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Pride Parade is a celebration of how far we’ve come.

Sharalynn Jordan works with Rainbow Refugee, an organization that helps people seeking refugee protection because of persecution based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status. She says this moment is for everyone who has been persecuted for who they are.

“I’ve had people say that walking this parade is one of the things that made them feel safe, made them feel celebrated for who they are for the first time in their lives.”

One of those refugees is Marc from Lebanon. He says this is a chance to show the world the real version of himself. “I put all the colours I could find on me and I’m shining today!”

People like sister Visa Decline with the Vancouver Sister’s of Perpetual Indulgence say this day is perfect to recommit to what needs to be done next.

“It’s still important because we see what’s happening in Africa, what’s happening in Russia, what’s happening with Transgender rights everywhere.”

Michael is marching for the people who can’t.

“There are a lot of young people who, unfortunately, are taking their own lives,” he says. “I think we need to provide more resources for them.”

“We are marching on behalf of all the people that don’t have the same privilege in this world,” echoes Shadi. “It’s just such a joy to be able to come together with this beautiful community and celebrate on this wonderful day.”
