What do you want to hear from the federal leaders in the Maclean’s debate?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We are just two days away from seeing the four main federal party leaders go head to head for the first — and possibly the only time — during the election campaign.

What will you be listening for in the Maclean’s National Leaders Debate? And is there anything they can say this early on to sway you one way or another?

Speaking to people in Vancouver, NEWS 1130 has been hearing one issue mentioned more than others.

“It’s the same issue that’s on the media for the past nine months, and it’s been the economy,” says Ian.

“I’ve lived here for just over four years and I’ve never heard such negative press about the economy and attacking the government, so clearly things are getting bad. Not just the housing market for here; I live in Toronto actually, so there as well. Prices are escalating. And the economy overall for the country [is an issue] because of the price of oil, and they say that the jobs have increased — whether that’s actually part-time jobs or full-time jobs.

“But that is the one topic that I think not just myself but everybody in general… wants to hear a response to and see what are their tactics. How are they going to approach and deal with the economy?”

Adam is particularly concerned about our low dollar.

“Our dollar has just taken a huge tumble. I want to hear how they plan to get it back up, how they plan to get our economy kind of back to where it was a few years ago,” he tells us.

Dennis is concerned about government hampering the economy.

“Politicians should let the natural economy happen the way it happens. They always try to be the leaders and they try to lead the economy, but an economy is going to happen or it’s not.”

Not everyone will be influenced by the debate.

John doesn’t think it’ll make a difference to how he marks his ballot. “I know what I’m doing and they can talk all they want. I know how I’m voting and I’ve known for a long time.”

One woman says she’ll specifically be watching what Justin Trudeau and Stephen Harper will have to say to each other.

Another person wants to know whether any of the opposition parties will repeal bills introduced by the Conservatives, like C-51.

Tune into NEWS 1130, City, or OMNI at 5 p.m. Pacific on Thursday to hear from Stephen Harper, Justin Trudeau, Tom Mulcair, and Elizabeth May. It will also be streamed on our website.
