Smoke from as far away as California affecting local air quality

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Smoke from another round of wildfires is once again affecting air quality.

People living in the Fraser Valley are being told to take care. Agassiz and Hope are mostly affected now, but the fine particulate matter is up in Abbotsford and Chilliwack as well.

The Regional district says people with lung illnesses should stay inside and avoid strenuous activity.

Geoff Doerksen with Metro Vancouver says smoke from fires south of the border is to mainly to blame for this advisory.

“We expect with the southwest flow for smoke to be pushed eastward. We don’t expect it to be expanded, but it potentially could.”

He says smoke from as far away as California is polluting the air. The warning will not be lifted until the wind changes.

Smoke from Washington State wildfires has triggered an air quality advisory for the Fraser Valley.
