CHILLIWACK (NEWS 1130) – An air quality advisory is still in effect for the eastern Fraser Valley, including Chilliwack, Aggasiz and Hope.
The build-up of smoke is thanks to wildfires burning in Washington State, with some smoke coming from the Wood Lake fire near Harrison Lake.
Metro Air Quality Planner Geoff Doerkson says they are not worried the air quality will get as bad for the region like it did last month.
“Fine particulate matter levels are much lower during this event than we saw in July. We’re going to see a similar weather pattern today as we saw yesterday.”
He adds the smoke is staying in the Valley for the time being. “We do have some elevated fine particulate matter levels in Metro Vancouver, but really it’s being dispersed and pushed further east towards the Fraser Valley.”
Last month, an air quality advisory was in place for most of the region including Metro Vancouver, due to a thick layer of smoke that travelled from nearby wildfires.
People with underlying health conditions, the very young and the elderly in the Valley are being asked to avoid strenuous exercise and take it easy if they can.
