Former Surrey mayor Dianne Watts back in the spotlight running for Conservatives

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Once considered one of the most popular mayors in this region, now Surrey’s Dianne Watts is hoping to get votes in the federal election.

She’s running for the Conservatives in the riding of South Surrey-White Rock and she is laying out her priorities, should she win.

Watts is downplaying the impact she has on this election, but her name does carry a lot of weight.

She says if she’s elected in October, she’ll focus on rail safety and fighting crime.

“There’s a number of different issues and of course, policing, is under the federal jurisdiction and that is something of course is top of mind as well.”

Her strategy is nothing unique — she’s speaking with people to find out what they feel are the biggest issues and she’ll try to pitch them solutions.

“Being in politics for as long as I have and dealing with the multitude of issues in running a city that is growing very quickly, it does really help you understand what’s going on in the community and in the city.”

Watts has lived in Surrey for 23 years and hopes those who supported her as mayor will do the same should she win.

“The policies that I undertook for the City of Surrey do align with the policies of the Conservative Party and it’s ensuring that jobs are growing in different sectors, that there are jobs there for young families and people that are getting out of school. As well, we have the lowest taxes in the region, second lowest business taxes in the region — those pieces align very well.”

She won’t say how confident she is that she’ll win.

“I never take anything for granted in any election that I’ve run in. And it’s matter of putting your nose to the grindstone and just working until the election is over, then the chips fall where they may.”

The federal election is October 19th.
