Illegal dumping on the rise in the Fraser River

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Crews are complaining about the rise in illegal dumping along the Fraser River in the Valley.
The expensive problem has been steadily getting worse every year and its costing municipalities along the river tens of thousands of dollars in cleanup costs.
Joe Daniels with the group Fraser RiverKeeper says they’ve recently found everything from discarded furniture and appliances, to chemicals from dismantled drug labs.
“To give you an idea, we hosted a clean-up in the Spring where we did a clean-up with about 200 people in a about a one square kilometre area by the river there and we pulled out about 10 tonnes of garbage out of there in about four hours.”
Daniels says people want to help report it, but it might be case of knowing how. “People were reporting it but they weren’t reporting it exactly to the right authority. I would recommend if you can take photos discreetly do that. Definitely do not approach the dumper.”
New signs are now going up all along the Fraser, advising people to report illegal dumping by calling the Report All Poachers and Polluters line.
