When will we see Vancouver pot shops close due to new regulations?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It could be awhile before we see some medical marijuana dispensaries close down in Vancouver because of new regulations now in place.

Don Briere with Weeds, Glass & Gifts says he’s filled out stage one applications for his nine shops. That includes outlining the distance from schools and community centres, which can’t be within 300 meters.

But he tells us there’s a bit of leeway. “If it’s 30 feet or 20 feet within that zone, there’s a variance board that you can talk to. If the 20 feet is not an issue, then the place can stay.”

In the next step, the city will evaluate each shop on a case-by-case basis; that process could take up to two months.

If an application fails, he says he’ll just set up somewhere else.

“They have the right to find a location that is acceptable. So… some will close. But if we have to close some, we’re going to move outside the city.”

Even with the rules — which he feels are a little strict — he plans to continue to expand his business.
