UBC to incorporate mental health courses into teaching degree

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Teachers see a variety of kids in their classrooms and have lots of time to get to know them — and the University of BC says that makes teachers a valuable tool in the fight against teen mental illness.

UBC says, starting this fall, it’s equipping its bachelor of education students to recognize and understand mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety.

Elective courses about mental health and human behaviour are now being folded into required components of U-B-C’s teacher education courses.

Mental health experts say an estimated 3.2 million Canadian youth aged 12 to 19 are at risk of depression, but only one in five young people actually seeks help.
