Evacuation alert in Grand Forks area due to Stickpin wildfire in WA State

GRAND FORKS (NEWS 1130) – People in parts of Grand Forks and Christina Lake are on evacuation alert as a nearly 20,000-hectare wildfire in Washington State closes in on the border.

The alert was issued because of strong winds in the region.

Fire Information Officer Kayla Pepper says the situation is bad down there, crews from BC have gone down to help, “to create control lines… and ultimately stop the fire. They are also facing very smokey conditions.”

“We have several aircraft on standby. They are ready to respond, should the smokey skies clear up and they’re able to action it,” she adds.

“For a helicopter to fly, they need at least one-mile visibility. We have been able to get some aircraft in the air today, so we’re hoping that with the winds, we do see that clearing out and the visibility increased,” explains Pepper.

The Stickpin wildfire was sparked by lightning and is less than one-fifth contained.
