Storm struck while cyclists were raising money for the Ride to Conquer Cancer

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Part of the Ride to Conquer Cancer had to be postponed when the storm hit Saturday.
Mike was one of the nearly 2,100 cyclists biking from Cloverdale to Seattle to raise funds for cancer research over the weekend.
He says the wind made it way too dangerous to continue.
“Power lines were coming down, trees were coming down, we were dodging leaves, we were dodging branches, we were eating mouthfuls of pine cones and pine needles,” Mike says. “They had to stop and I think at one point, one lady actually got hit by a tree and ambulance services had to come and take her away and I think at that point it was when they realized.”
Erik Dierks with the BC Cancer Foundation says riders were still in good spirits.
“They thought about people that they knew, or they themselves having gone through cancer and realized that all that work, all that peddling, all that wind, all that rain was nothing compared to what cancer patients go through.”
This year’s ride raised $8.4-million.
