BC Hydro says it has never restored power to so many customers in such a short time

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – With a few thousand people still without power after Saturday’s windstorm, BC Hydro has been facing a lot of anger and frustration from folks upset with all the outages.

The utility’s VP of customer service says the restoration efforts are “unprecedented.”

Greg Reimer says they’ve never dealt with numbers like this over such a short period of time. “We had 533,000 of our customers out. Our crews have restored power to over 525,000 customers in a little over two days, which is amazing.”

He tells us he was speaking with a senior field manager who’s worked for BC Hydro for 35 years, “and said he’s never seen anything like this.”

“Our restoration machine is a well-oiled machine. We do this well,” he adds.

Crews have been working 16-hour shifts to restore electricity.

Reimer says many of the customers still without power today are actually new outages since Saturday’s windstorm.

Yesterday’s intense rain has softened the ground, making it difficult to get heavy machinery into some areas.
