Learning an ever changing process: BC Curriculum readjusts

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The province is making major changes to its school curriculum, with the intention of preparing students for a rapidly changing world.

These changes will incorporate the fundamentals of reading, writing and math that we’re all used to, according to Education Minister Mike Bernier.

The main focus, according to Bernier, is giving kids the skills they need for adult life, either in a job or at college or university.

“The big focus we have here in the province now is that flexibility in the classroom for our students around the collaboration, critical thinking, and working on their communication skills which are going to be so important in the decades to come.”

The changes also mean students will have a greater ability to pursue their passions within special projects.

First Nation history will also be more prominently featured, including a focus on what happened at residential schools.

“The world is changing as we were talking about, and from an educational standpoint we need to make sure that we’re evolving, we’re changing as well,” says Bernier.

BC Teachers Federation President Jim Iker says they want to know the details about new textbooks and materials for the classroom.

“These are some areas that we have some concern about in terms of the implementation and we know that for implementation to happen, it’s got to be done in a way that ensures that our teachers have the time, the space and service needed.”

Iker is pleased that more First Nation history is being included.
