VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Advocates say a picture of a drowned Syrian toddler is a wake-up call for Canadians to ramp up the humanitarian response to the war over there.

Faisal Al Azem with the Syrian Canadian Council wants more refugees allowed into Canada from Syria.

“We’ve seen great humanitarian reactions by our government when it comes to natural disasters but when it comes to the war in Syria we [haven’t] seen the same response,” he says. “The victims of this war suffer as much or you can even make the case, even more than victims of natural disasters.”

He says the picture of the of the boy who drowned is a wake-up call.

“The only issue for his parents was to put him in this book. You know this is the great tragedy that the waters and all the dangers of being smuggled in a boat became safer than the land.”

He’s encouraging you to sponsor a Syrian refugee privately.
