New distracted driving legislation could be coming soon

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you’re annoyed by distracted drivers on the road, Justice Minister Suzanne Anton says tougher penalties should be coming in a few months.

NEWS 1130 asked her today whether she would consider punishments in the range Ontario has chosen.

That includes a $500 fine for first-time offenders and 30-day licence suspensions for new drivers.

“So Ontario does have very steep penalties for distracted driving. They’re taking the issue very seriously. We are analyzing the results of the public consultation, we are analyzing what other provinces are doing and we will be announcing, before too long, what our proposed approach in British Columbia is,” says Anton. “There’s no question that the public thinks that the fine of $167 is too low.”

The province began its public consultation process in June.
