Rivero and Techera score to lead the Whitecaps past the Rapids

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps moved to the top of Major League Soccer’s overall standings with a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rapids at BC Place. David Ousted made four saves to record the clean sheet.

After a goalless first half, Vancouver opened the scoring in the 73rd minute. Octavio Rivero hit the 10-goal mark in his first MLS season as he headed home a pass from Cristian Techera to make it 1-0.

Just four minutes after the Rivero goal, Techera got one himself as the ball fell to him in the box and he made no mistake. That goal gave Techera six on the season.

With the result, the Whitecaps avoided being swept in the three-game season series. Colorado had beaten Vancouver 1-0, and 2-1 earlier in the season.

The Whitecaps (15W-3D-10L) moves two points ahead of the Los Angeles Galaxy for first place in the overall standings. Their 15 wins are also tops in the league.

Vancouver will take on CD Olimpia in CONCACAF Champions League action on Sep. 16, and then will return to MLS play on Sep. 19 against the Seattle Sounders.
