RCMP say Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette found dead, suspect in custody

BLAIRMORE, Alta. – RCMP investigating the abduction of a two-year-old girl who was the subject of an Amber Alert in southwestern Alberta have found human remains.

Victims services officials made the announcement Tuesday night to a horrified crowd that had gathered in Blairmore, Alta., at a candlelight vigil for Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette.

“We have found the body of two year old Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette in a rural location near Blairmore, Alberta. The body was located during a police search based on information received by investigators in their efforts to locate Hailey,” said Supt. Tony Hamori in a news conference.

The little girl had been abducted early Monday morning from the town of Blairmore.

“This is a sad day for the investigators, the citizens of Blairmore and all the Canadians who hoped Hailey would be found and returned. Our goal now is to complete the investigation into Hailey’s death and her father, Terry,” he added.

Her father, Terry Blanchette, 27, was found dead in the home and police believe his death was a homicide.

Mounties have a 22-year-old suspect in custody.

Hamori said the name of the man, who was arrested in Blairmore on Tuesday, wouldn’t be released until charges had been laid.
