Beck hurt as Lions lose to Stampeders

CALGARY, AB (NEWS 1130) – Quarterback John Beck had to leave the game with an injury in the second quarter and Jonathan Jennings threw three interceptions in his place, as the BC Lions fell 35-23 to the Calgary Stampeders.

Beck was hurt late in the second quarter. He appeared to be favouring his shoulder as he limped off the field after being sacked, and was quickly ruled out for the rest of the game by the team.

Kick returner Chris Rainey was the lone bright spot for the Leos. Rainey returned the opening kickoff in the second half 103 yards for a touchdown, and then in the fourth quarter he returned a punt 103 yards for another score to tie the game 21-21.

The Stampeders took the game over after the second Rainey touchdown. Bryant Moniz scored on a one-yard rush, which was followed by Jennings’ first interception of the night. Calgary turned that turnover into a score, as Jon Cornish rumbled into the endzone from 16 yards out.

Bo Levi Mitchell was terrific under centre for the Stampeders. He completed 21-of-34 pass attempts for 268 yards and two touchdowns.

The loss drops the Lions’ record to 4-7. BC will visit the Edmonton Eskimos on Sep. 26.
