Canucks hit the ice for training camp

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Canucks don’t start their exhibition schedule until Monday but players are on the ice for their first training camp practice in Prince George today.

The early focus will be on the team’s group of young players trying to secure a spot in the line-up.

“Jake Virtanen, the Abbotsford kid, is a kid that everybody’s talking about,” says Rick Dhaliwal in the NEWS 1130 Sports Centre.

“He had a great tournament in Penticton at the young stars. This is a kid who’s got the body, the size, the speed to play at the NHL level. Jake Virtanen’s going to get every opportunity to make this hockey club this year.”

Some fans are will be watching the Sedin twins, who are just over a week away from their 35th birthday. But Dhaliwal doubts age has caught up to the Sedins.

“Everybody wrote the Sedin twins off last year. It was something that they shouldn’t have done because these guys can still play the game of hockey. They are still quality players. I think writing these guys off is a mistake again.”

The Canucks open the exhibition schedule early next week with a pair of games against the Sharks.
