SEATTLE, WA (NEWS 1130) – For the second time in five days, the Vancouver Whitecaps suffered a loss at the hands of the Seattle Sounders. Lamar Neagle scored twice as the Sounders took a 3-0 victory in CONCACAF Champions League play.
Neagle opened the scoring off a nice feed from Chad Barrett in the 32nd minute. Barrett doubled the lead with a goal of his own in the 39th minute, and then set-up Neagle for the final goal just a couple of minutes into the second half.
The Whitecaps needed at least a single point to stay alive in the chase for top spot in the group, and with a win they would have clinched first place and a spot in the knockout round. Instead, Seattle’s victory locks up first place and ensures that the Sounders will move. Honduran club CD Olimpia is the final team in the three-team group.
Vancouver also suffered a 3-0 loss to Seattle in MLS play on Saturday. It was their final meeting of the MLS regular season.
Vancouver and Olimpia will play a meaningless match to wrap-up the group stage on Oct. 22 in Honduras.
